Fruit of the Spirit – Lesson 6 Long-Suffering

Long-Suffering – A Result of Abiding
Introduction:
If every saint bore the fruit of long-suffering, problems in the church would disappear. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you this long-suffering so that the cause of Christ be not hindered!
I. Our Example
A. II Peter 3:9
II. A Parable about being long-suffering
A. Matthew 18:21-35
Read and explain the Parable.
III. Long-suffering a requirement for saints
A. Read the following and list all of the graces listed with long-suffering that we as saints should have:
1. Ephesians 4:1-3
2. Colossians 1:9-14
B. Why do you think long-suffering is so important?
IV. Long-suffering – a requirement for ministers and those ministering
A. II Corinthians 6:1-10
B. II Timothy 4:1-5
Conclusion:
“The believer should have much of this. Some of us, perhaps, may be naturally quick tempered; grace must overcome angry passions. It is not for you to say, ‘I cannot help it’; the fruit of the Spirit is long-suffering – you must help it. If there is no change in your temper, there is no change in you at all; you have need to be converted. If the grace of God does not help you in a measure to keep under that temper which will be there, but which you must restrain, you have need to go to God and ask Him to make sound work in you, or there is no work of grace there yet. We must have long-suffering, or we may be found fruitless, and then woe unto us.”
- Charles H. Spurgeon
TO DO: Long-suffering is defined in the dictionary as enduring injury, trouble, or provocation long and patiently. (dictionary.com). There are many today that suffer in different ways. It could be through illness, relationship problems or even job loss. Every Sunday there are many that come to church and we (other church members) have no idea of what they are going through. It is not always natural to bear the burdens of others. We are so caught up in ourselves.  We are also not to take or give offense. As ladies this can be a difficult task. Take time to get to know the other ladies in church. We are to be an example. We are to follow Christ. Take the focus off yourself. Pray for others. There are so many that need for you to take some time to talk with them. It may be that you take a meal to an elderly lady that is recovering from a recent surgery. Or you pray for a teen that is battling the world. Or even another church member that is struggling in her marriage. We are not to gossip or complain with or about them, but have kindness one to another. Set aside all personality conflicts. Seek help from the Lord. He will provide.
Challenge: Pray that the Lord will help you with long-suffering. This Sunday offer yourself to someone else or another family. Use the prayer list to seek others that need help. You could mail a card to someone recovery from surgery or take them a meal.
